FREE CAD software
| The CD attached to the front of this issue of news.delcam contains two free CAD programs. The first is latest release of Delcam’s free viewing software, which allows users to view files from a wide rage of CAD systems. The second is an evaluation copy of version 3 of Delcam’s PowerSHAPE hybrid CAD modeller. The CD also contains new video demonstrations of all of Delcam’s Power Solution software and an expanded information centre containing a wide range of articles on product development and toolmaking taken from the Delcam web site. |

FREE viewer The CAD viewer, which runs under either Windows 2000 or Windows NT, allows data to be viewed by everyone involved in a project, even if they don’t have access to CAD software. This will be particularly useful for staff involved in sales or marketing, as they will be able to use the viewer to discuss progress with the customer, without having to interrupt the company’s CAD operators. The viewer can be used to view files taken directly from CATIA, Pro/Engineer (up to version 2000i), SolidWorks and Unigraphics, as well as from PowerSHAPE. The software also supports the main neutral formats – Parasolid XT, IGES, VDA and STEP – so that data from other CAD systems can also be imported and viewed. Delcam customers can obtain extra copies of the viewer for distribution to their clients and collaborators. This will enable PowerSHAPE users to send files to anyone involved in a project and obtain their comments more easily. At any stage in a project, when the PowerSHAPE user needs clarification from his customer, he can simply send the file and ask for feedback. Supplying the PowerSHAPE viewer along with the file will remove any need for the client to translate the data before he can view it. |

PowerSHAPE evaluation The evaluation copy of PowerSHAPE on the CD has the save capability disabled but contains all the system’s functionality for both solid and surface modelling. It can be used to create your own new designs or to import and modify models from other CAD systems. The evaluation version also contains all of PowerSHAPE’s tools for the analysis of CAD models, including surface smoothness analysis, minimum radius checking, location of duplicate surfaces, and wall thickness and draft angle measurement. These tools can be used in conjunction with the viewing software by sales staff wishing to perform a quick, initial analysis of a model for estimating purposes. |
| Information centre The information centre on the CD contains several hundred articles on the use of CADCAM in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, packaging, footwear and ceramics. There are also a number of case studies on related technology, such as rapid prototyping and high-speed machining. Together, they provide a useful guide to the latest applications of CADCAM technology, with many useful ideas on how to get the most from your CADCAM software. |
